Windows 7 Mini-Review (Part 2) - User Interface

Dear Readers,

If you have been using Windows Vista , you will be confused as to what Windows 7 has to offer in terms of User interface. Windows 7, looks mostly like Windows Vista. But there are a few upgrades which makes 7 a very user friendly OS. And it makes the workflow a smoother one for those who use computers on a daily base.
When Vista was released, the looks were a positive upgrade over XP, but creating a highly graphical OS had its negative effects, which was its performance. So Microsoft tried their level best in tweaking the graphic stack, in which they succeeded and Windows 7 can finally be called Smooth n Sexy OS!

So what all makes Windows 7 "Smooth n Sexy"?

If you install Windows 7 yourself, the first glimpse of the desktop will be a clean and pristine crystal screen. With only the Recycle bin on the desktop. Of course Laptop/Desktop manufacturers who will bundle Windows 7 with their hardware are likely to add crap on your desktop, so the first look will vary from user to user.

The New Task Bar
taskbar
This is the biggest change in Windows 7 over Vista. The Taskbar has been revamped to become a powerful, yet a simplified tool. The taskbar is the bar at the bottom of your screen where the Start button is located.
The task bar in Windows 7 manages an application shortcut and currently running window on the same icon. This helps in keeping the taskbar tidy when you have many applications open and gives you quick access to opening your programs.
The icon also provides a Quick View option, so you just hover your mouse over the icon and the open window will become visible to you on the screen.

The icons in the taskbar has a new feature called "Jump Lists". These are quick tasks which are relevant to their respective programs. For example if you have MSN Messenger icon on the taskbar, without opening the MSN window you can easily sign out, go away mode, or view options directly from the taskbar.

The task bar also has a revamped notification area. This is on the far right of your screen, where you see the volume and network button. Now you can assign which icon to be visible and which to be invisible. So you can have your taskbar clean and tidy.

Gadgets
Gadgets are small floating programs which give you quick access to information. Like Clock, Calendar, Weather, News. This feature was already there in Vista, but it was part of a SideBar program. Hence if you wanted to add gadgets to your desktop, you would have to have sidebar open. Which takes up extra memory. In W7, The gadgets are standalone and can be added to the desktop. This reduces the memory usage and makes windows seem faster on computers with less RAM.

Aero Peek
This is a new feature added to improve your productivity. Aero Peek has 2 simple features;

1. Desktop Peek : There is a small grey area on the bottom right of your screen, where you can just move your mouse over that area and ALL your open windows will turn transparent, and you can get a view of your desktop.

(Desktop Peek can be enabled by hovering over the transparent box on the right)

2. Application Peek : This will turn all other open windows transparent and only display the window you are currently trying to focus on. This is particularly helpful if you want to peek at a window without clicking on it. You just move your mouse over the open program icon, and it will display the window.

Aero Shake
You take the top title bar of any window, and drag and shake the window, All other open windows will be minimize accept the window you are shaking. Its helpful when you have 20 windows open, and you only need to work with 1. You just shake that 1 window, and the other 19 windows will be minimized to the taskbar. Shake it again and they will return to its original state.
Aero Snaps
This is a feature that i have got so hooked to, that i cannot really work on Windows without it.
Snap on Top :: Drag any window to the center of the screen and your window will be maximized.
Snap to Sides :: Drag the window to the Far right of your screen and it will attach itself on the right occupying 50% of the screen. Same applies for dragging it to Left. This is VERY helpful if you want to work with 2 documents simultaneously with both sharing 50-50 of the screen.
Aero Themes
Windows 7 comes with a large variety of pre installed themes, with their own Wallpaper, Color Scheme and Sounds to match the theme you select. The themes are very well though of in terms of style.
